Back in the studio, I started drawing the shapes that had caught my eye.

Rather than trying to reproduce the plant botanically, I wanted to capture what I remembered most—the movement. Curving stems, little offshoots and irregular leafy silhouettes began to weave around one another as I drew.
And there were a lot of them.

My hand may have had a few opinions about this decision by the end.
There was also something else floating around on our walks that time of year: fluff. Lots of fluff. Everywhere. 😂 Little wisps and seed heads seemed to be drifting through the air everywhere we went. Since Wormwood Waltz was becoming a little memory of those walks with Rollo and Onree, it felt only right to let some of that seasonal fluff float into the pattern too. Those delicate little seed heads now dance between the larger wormwood leaves—another small piece of the walk captured in the final design.
It was that time of the season when little bits of fluffy seeds seemed to be floating through the air constantly—drifting past us and occasionally landing wherever they pleased. Since Wormwood Waltz was already becoming a little snapshot of those walks with Rollo and Onree, it seemed only fitting that some of that seasonal fluff should make its way into the pattern too. 😂
So tucked among all those wandering leaves is a little fluff motif—a tiny nod to what was literally floating around us when the inspiration for this pattern began.
As the motifs came together, I loved the sense of movement they created. The leaves twist and turn, the stems sweep past one another, and even that little piece of fluff seems to be caught in the breeze.

It all started to feel like a dance.
And that’s when the name arrived:
Wormwood Waltz. 🌿
