A playful study of one of pattern design’s most enduring geometric forms, Harlequin Parlour explores the classic diamond through rhythm, colour and repetition.

Created in Adobe Illustrator as part of my continuing studies through Barbel Dressler’s Repertoire course, the collection began as an exercise in lozenges and naturally wandered into the wonderfully theatrical world of harlequin patterns.

Across the collection, the diamonds shift between outlined, separated and seamlessly touching arrangements, allowing the same simple geometry to take on surprisingly different personalities. A palette of dusty aqua, terracotta, ochre, cream, rose, deep aubergine and inky blue gives the traditional motif a warm, slightly nostalgic character.

Structured but playful, familiar but freshly interpreted, Harlequin Parlour is a little exploration of what can happen when one simple shape is given room to perform.
